Young Audiences Arts for Learning

Calderfest in Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Children's Museum decided to mount a major retrospective of the work of Alexander Calder during the 1996-97 school year. While they are a world-class resource and leader in childrens' museums they were concerned about how this important exhibit could be connected to students, teachers and schools. They asked Young Audiences to work with curators during the planning phase to develop a truly educational outreach program.
Young Audiences' arts in education specialists worked with area artists to create a dynamic series of performances, workshops and projects using the underlying principles of Calder's work . . . including balance, symmetry, and movement. Teacher worked to create units of study in the arts, language arts, sciences, and social studies that resulted in "The Calder Curriculum." This useful tool was distributed to every school.
