Educators in Houston were concerned about helping Hispanic students connect to their rich cultural heritage and to help other students understand their classmates background. Encuentro Hispanico targets middle school children. Through a series of performances and workshops students learn about Hispanic art and culture. Actors portray historical characters and engage in dialogues with students. Prominent Hispanic community leaders also visit schools to share their experiences with students. This program has significantly raised the self-esteem of Hispanic students and engendered the respect of their classmates.
"When America's minority children are shown the beautiful tapestry of the roots of American music, they're handed the keys to their cultural heritage. They take pride in the amazing contributions of their forefathers and that pride instills hope."
---Michael Green, NARAS, producer of the Grammys
