Young Audiences Arts for Learning

Orchestra Training Program in Indianapolis

25 inner-city high school string students who are unable to afford private music instruction receive both professional instruction and have numerous performance opportunities through the Young Audiences Orchestra Training Program. These students are also eligible for scholarships to the Great Lake Music Camp during the summer. This program has a dual purpose of helping students increase their musical skills and self-esteem while also improving orchestras in their home schools. In 1996 this program was included in "Coming Up Taller: Arts and Humanities Programs for Children and Youth At Risk" of the PresidentŐs Committee on the Art and Humanities.

"Students should understand their cultural roots and have a better appreciation of other cultures. They should learn that one is not limited by one's culture, and that a white person can be a jazz musician, and an African-American can play in the New York Philharmonic."
---John Bierworth, School Superintendent
